Dave Braun and I tackle the obvious "badass" line on Humphreys' southeast ridge. A classic and lovely steep drop into the heart of the cirque from the very top of Arizona. And why not add a little bonus action off the opposite side of the cirque for good measure? March 28, 2024

Steven Bradshaw Climbs Yahoo Predator (5.13b) - Tick Rock
Просмотров 8567 месяцев назад
"Yahoo Predator" is a fierce urban 5.13 located in Pacific Palisades, California (Los Angeles), just north of Sunset Boulevard. Does Steve's use of an inner tube on his knee qualify as aid climbing? Not my call, but for you purists out there, I'd tilt in that direction myself. FA by Jeff Costine and Scott Cosgrove in 2010, and we're guessing not too many successful climbs since. Baxter Treasure Hunt: An Eastern Sierra Adventure

Granite & Hermit: We Broke an Oar!

We raft the Colorado River through Grand Canyon with my good friend and Canyon Explorations trip leader Marieke Taney. Thanks to the 2022-2023 winter, the Colorado saw some of its biggest flows in years this spring, making Hermit truly monstrous in size. As we ran it, Hermit's fifth wave caught and instantly snapped our left oar. It was a sobering reminder of the river's power. Shot with a Hero...
Mount Perkins, Armstrong Canyon, & Division Creek Road

Rossignol Escaper Nano 97 Review (2023/2024)

The Escaper Nano is a light (sub 6lbs/pair) touring ski from Rossignol. At this weight, hard snow performance is a compromise, but the Escaper is notably better on soft snow, making it a credible powder touring choice.

That’s me in the bikini at 1:19! 😅😂
really??
This is badass!
That’s crazy- climbing Baldy is hard enough. Well done!!
crazy--but in a good way :)
agree, I also realized that GS race class skies are not good for the slope as they work from such high speeds. So comming from FIS, I tested Volkl Racetiger GS "commercial" ski and its much more fun and has energy in lower speeds. Can be bent into quite short turns if necessary and still returns perfect energy in rebound. Ideal on the slope where there is people arround. Of course I am just expert and fit recreational skier, might be different for people with racing background.
An Andy Lewicky production is always God's gift to humankind. I recall the video you posted of your daughter negotiating MJB's quite capably when she was just a tad taller than the moguls and now I see that she is quite an accomplished skier. Your son rocks too. Love the tele skill you display in this latest production and the music is awesome too. Don't know how you get those amazing side on shots but then again, most things about good video production are beyond me. Warms my heart anytime I get to see a Lewicky production!
John glad you enjoyed it! Those side-by-side shots get a little exciting at times, but anything for the art :)
Nice: That is "Skiing" vs "Surviving." He is also "Finishing theTurns" that is ending the turn on edge going the direction the skis are pointed.
There was more snow in July of 2023 than in this video!
if you ask me, too much snow would have spoiled it :)
Still haven’t to this day. See someone send it without the use of kneepads but good effort. These are aids I did not use climbing on the original FA with Cosgrove. No bars needed there you go
Noted! Jeff thanks for all your work developing and maintaining this area. It's a hidden gem. Let me know if you ever want a videographer :)
I did it without a kneepad. I re-listed the video on my channel from a few months ago
@@renaldjulien8424 nice! but you are wearing a shirt :)
Wow, count me both impressed & humbled by your trek out to, up, down, and back out from Kendrick. By my own measure, that's at least 3.5 miles of horizontal skinning from 180 before even heading uphill at Kendrick. I've only managed a couple of small trek's up and down the smallish, bare hills about 1/2 mile west of 180 starting at the pull out at FR 191C (about 2 miles north of Hart Prairie Rd's north intersection with 180)...but I've never even "possibility thought" about trekking out and up Kendrick. I guess I now have a new goal. Many thanks for the share !
When I did this I couldn't park farther south along the highway because there was too much snow. That added about a mile (one-way) to the approach. Otherwise it's a reasonable distance and a very worthy destination. Enjoy! :)
Until it is piped to LA
thanks for this video!
That girl is a darn good skier. That young woman, I mean. I skied Baldy a little bit every winter from 1979-80 through 1984-85. One time, I think in about 1983, I was skiing Chair 3, and I think I was on the "Skyline" trail. I stopped about halfway down and I looked back up the trail. There was only one other person skiing down, and he was pretty good; not a technically "pretty" skier, but you could tell he was a strong guy and a strong skier. He had a very bomb proof, solid stance. So I'm just standing there, and he skis down to me and stops, and it's Arnold Schwarzenegger! And I go "Arnold!!" Because everybody knew Arnold even then, and even though the only movie he'd done at that time was Conan the Barbarian. Hadn't done Terminator yet. And he goes, "Conditions are pretty good to-day Yah?" And I go "Yeah, and it looks like you ski pretty good too." Or "you look like you've done a lot of skiing," or something along those lines. And then I kind of kicked myself because I was thinking "Well, of course, all the kids in Austria ski, so why wouldn't he be a good skier, and telling him he's a good skier makes it looks like you're assuming he shouldn't be, and who are you to be judging other peoples' skiing anyway, and now you look like an idiot." And he actually said, "Well, we all ski in Austria from the time we're kids you know.'" Or something like that. And I went, "Oh. Right." And then he goes, "Well, have a good day" and he skied on down. That was my brush with greatness at Mt. Baldy.
classic! you can totally picture him saying that :)
Nice vid boss.
Baldys last dance of the season, awesome ⛷️
Mt Baldy: a dish served best with of 38" of wind blasted powder or 58° of delicious spring corn...
The best day of skiing I ever had in SoCal (1972-82) was in early May at Mt Baldy. Following an unusual late season storm, skied multiple runs from the top of chair 1 to the parking lot. Steep, untracked snow, not powder, but very manageable, smooth, corn-like conditions. Don't remember seeing a single other person skiing those lower runs.
Mt Baldy!!! Haha nice
Looks like a great mountain
Great day 🎿
Wait, you didn't hike up this time?
I have had countless days of epic (winter) Baldy. Looks like ya'll still enjoying it!
Mount Baldy!!!
Looks fun! Closing day’s going to be interesting with these temps though.
it may snow on Sunday!
Your kids rip! Why am I not surprised though??
Been skiing on that mountain for the last 40 years...
This Weight/Radius/Shape/Width is the famous package that was "stolen" from DPS Wailer 99 T2 Hybrids (most decorated ski ever), which was stolen from Ross Souls. Nothing new. This is an amazing ski for athletes, tree skiers, powder, soft snow. With that kind of rocker and front shape that's all you need for powder. They will float you. It has that "sweet spot". Amazing ski. True West Coast ski. American type of skiing. No metal, no groomer non sense. Very hard to find skis like that these days, because they build those stiff skis with metal for hard pack.
I've hiked and backpacked and did snowshoeing in many parts of the San Gabriel mountains but your back country skiing makes one see it in another dimension. Beautiful winter landscape and the thrill of cold weather adventure. Enjoyed your video !!
Thanks for the great review, Andy. You seemed way more excited about the Ranger 102. Curious how the new Rustler 10 compare to the Ranger. My read from your comments is that even though the Rustler is now more directional and maybe have a better edge hold than the Ranger due to more metal, the Ranger is still a more capable Carver?
I think to be honest I was a little bit horrified that they had compromised the original's Rustler's standout ability -- its soft snow surfy playfulness -- in an attempt to make it compete with directional skis like the Bonafide, Ranger, Enforcer etc. If that's what you want, you get the Bonafide, or the Ranger, or the Enforcer, etc. The '24 Rustler, in my opinion, isn't competitive with those more dedicated all-mountain carvers--and it gave up something really special in an attempt to be more like them. :(
I'm thinking of buying these as my only ski to do it all. How are these on ice in the morning? Im a slower intermediate starting to do more blacks. Coming from enforcer 94s but find them alot of work. Im 5'6" 150 lbs.
I thought their edge grip on hard snow was good.
Looks like an awesome sunburn filled day 🤙😎🤙
I just moved here from SoCal... haven't done any touring yet but this definitely stoked the fire. Looks amazing - and good beta! Maybe I can find your tracks from the top of SnowBowl?
check out the Kachina Peaks Avalanche Center -- great local resource & you may be able to find like-minded partners
Looks so fun. Hey Dave!
I love Braun's commentary! That was some steep stuff and great views.
For years now I've been telling him he should do VO work for Hollywood
@@AndyLewicky Ha! He totally should!
That looks like a great corn ski! Still hoping to make it there on our way to the eastern sierras this spring.
I've seen people ski down the WNW face from the very top of telegraph peak. Was watching this epic feat from thunder mountain with everyone yelping and wooting as the skier progressed down. Did you consider this line also?
I haven't skied that in a while. It doesn't seem to set up as often as it used to. But I did make a video the last time I skied it -- search my channel for "Telegraph" and you'll find it :)
@@AndyLewicky Found it! That is a great video! The person I saw skiing was down the ridge facing more to the west. Reference your marked up dots in the beginning of your video, the right-ward facing slope in the sun.
@@voodooutt the broad face just right of Telegraph's prominent north couloir is kind of unremarkable--not sure if that's what you're talking about? But right of that is a striking west-facing gully with chutes and cliffs that go down a long way. I've dabbled in that area but the aspect and elevation tends to make it very icy and some of the lines cliff out
Rad!
Nicely done on all fronts with the production of this one, Andy! Brought a smile to my face.
Wet but fun. What is it like in December?
Typically a shallow and cranky snowpack--though the trend is wetter these days
Really hope the hubby and I can ski something up there later in April.
Did you use the chairlift?
@@ellen1231 would normally, but it was initially closed so we just hiked up from Hart Prairie
Brave Souls.
Great review, Andy! Curious about the comment that you "don't need that much floatation and would ski a narrower version"---is it because the conditions you tour in, or because you are a lighter skier? Asking as a lighter skier who finds 95 providing enough floatation in Utah, resisting the temptation of getting a 105 touring setup.
I am lighter, and I tend to ski denser (coastal) snowpacks, but I also just don't like skis that sit on top of powder. I like to be able to float down into it (I learned to ski in an era of very narrow skis). Even in the Wasatch, ~102mm underfoot is as wide as I'd ever want. But that's just personal taste
What part of sugarloaf was this off what streets ??
Hatchery drive ascending the gullies on the north side of Sugarloaf
This video deserves way more views than 3300 after a year. Loved the views, especially the north face of Baldy from Pine.
def one of the most inspiring sights in the range!
Bro why do I keep hearing north face of baldy, what is that?
@@bds9203 see 12:59 the north face of Mount San Antonio aka "Mount Baldy". We began the traverse by skiing down Baldy's north face, and for much of the rest of it, the north face pops in and out of view
I love seein and doin that . Fresh power tracks way in the back country. Charlton and Jepson awesome peaks to be on. Nice n high lotsa snow
Good review.
Not good seeing you go solo on this hike. You overextended a bit.
Thanks!
That was a special kind of crazy!
I ducked under that branch watching😝
Nice dude once again you claim the prize🤙🏻
Nice Andy, We’ll be exploring this zone this season as well. Via different route though, we’ve got our eyes on some lines a little more accessible from the desert floor. Pleasant view ridge, some really epic north facing lines from the PB
It's an amazing part of the range. I had no idea that trail existed. Was just looking at my Harrison map and suddenly said "hey -- what's that??" :)
